Nature Walks and Hiking
Kidepo Valley National Park is a nature lover's paradise, with its breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife. The park offers a range of nature walks and hiking trails that allow visitors to explore the park's beauty up close.
The Lomej Mountains are a popular hiking destination, with a hike that starts at 7 a.m. and takes approximately four hours to complete. Shorter guided walks of around two hours can be taken through the Narus Valley, which is located 5 kilometers away from Mara Safari Lodge. Visitors can also wander along the splendid Kidepo River Valley between banks of attractive Borassus palm forests. Namamkweny Valley can be reached in one Kilometre from Masa Safari Lodge. Visitors can also meet members of the IK tribe during prearranged hikes to the Morungole Mountains outside the park.
Kidepo Valley National Park is home to over 480 bird species - the second-highest of any park in Uganda after Queen Elizabeth. Birding is best done on the fringes of the Narus and Namamukweny Valleys, where you have higher chances of catching a glimpse of rare species such as the Abyssinian Roller, Purple Heron, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Clapperton’s Francolin, Black-breasted Barbet, and Karamoja Apalis - which is found only in Kidepo.
Being at the intersection between North Africa's arid climate and East Africa's savannah grasslands makes it an ideal habitat for a wide variety of bird species. The best times for birding are dusk and dawn when most birds are active. However, early morning and mid-morning are also advisable.
