Bird Watching
Whether you’re a seasoned birder or a curious beginner, we’ve got you covered. Our birding experience is designed to be the highlight of your trip, whether as part of the game drives or an independent itinerary.
Kidepo Valley National Park is home to over 480 bird species - the second-highest of any park in Uganda after Queen Elizabeth. But that’s not all - 12 out of the 50 birds of prey in Uganda live in the Karamoja region, giving the park a fair competitive advantage.
Birding is best done on the fringes of the Narus and Namamukweny Valleys, where you have higher chances of catching a glimpse of rare species such as the Abyssinian Roller, Purple Heron, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Clapperton’s Francolin, Black-breasted Barbet, and Karamoja Apalis - which is found only in Kidepo.
We are in close proximity to Namakwanyi Valley areas where there are several bird species from this magnificent valley. Apart from the bird sightings, tourists can have excellent views of Kidepo and many other wildlife. This Valley is located one kilometer away from our Lodge and one needs about 1.5 hours to complete the birding.
Get your binoculars, telescopes, and cameras ready to capture the birding expedition of a lifetime. Come up close with Ostriches, the Secretary Bird, the African Swallow-tailed Kite, the Eastern Pale Chanting Goshawk, Pygmy Falcon, Fox Kestrel, Stone Partridge, Clapperton’s, and Heuglin’s Francolins, the Yellow-billed hornbill, Egyptian vulture, Jackson’s hornbill among other rare species.
Kidepo Valley National Park is a unique meeting point for birds from different geographical zones - especially migratory birds that flock between November to April. Being at the intersection between North Africa’s arid climate and East Africa’s savannah grasslands makes it an ideal habitat for a wide variety of bird species.
The best times for birding are dusk and dawn when most birds are active. However, early morning and mid-morning are also advisable. So what are you waiting for?
